Racing at Wastelands
Here’s a look at Round 3 of the CMRC Vancouver Island Spring Series
There was some great motocross racing at Nanaimo’s Wastelands track on May 18—with sunny skies and warm temperatures. The track has completely been changed this year and the Nanaimo club should pat themselves on the back as they did a terrific job. The track has been reversed and in order to do that, countless hours of work were put in; it was a job well done.

A lot of riders participated in this round of racing. Riders from all over the Island showed up, as well as riders from across the water; several riders from the mainland also took part, as this event took place on a long weekend. The riders had to drink a lot of water this weekend to keep from dehydrating and the track had to be watered to keep the dust down. There was even a slight delay during the morning motos so the club could water the track. Great riding took place all day long in each class.
In the Ladies class, it was Camille Baker of Nanaimo who roared out of the start gates to take an early lead in both motos and held the lead all the way to the finish line. Baker was pursued by Port Alberni rider Amy Aspell who finished the day in second place. Paige Hansen, also of Port Alberni, finished the day in third place overall.
In the 125 Intermediate class it was New Westminster rider Spencer Knowles who put on a real show with his high-flying antics; Knowles took home first place overall while second place went to Ross Sherman of Saanichton and third place went to Nick Syrotuck of Nanoose Bay.
Knowles was also entered in the 250 Intermediate class. Once again, he was well out in front and went unchallenged to take the checkered flag and return home first overall for the day. Second went to Courtenay rider Eric Wickman and third place went to Cory Forrest of Duncan.
In the 125 Junior class Brayden Olsen of Courtenay roared through the whole shot and built up a huge lead with each lap to take first place overall. Second place overall went to Kyle Morlock of Nanaimo while third place went to Conner Barnes of Shawnigan Lake.
There was some full-throttle racing in the 125 and 250 Pro class. In the 125 class two of the top three riders were from Courtenay. It was Colton McLean who came home with first place overall. Second place went to Whistler with Shaun Greenway and third place overall went to Darcy Lange of Courtenay.
Both McLean and Wickman did some great riding in the Youth class but it was McLean who took home first place overall for the day while Wickman returned home in second place. Ryan Bissenden took home third place overall for Duncan.
In the 250 Pro class, it was Campbell River’s Andrew Belin who was the rider to catch if anyone wanted to finish in first place; however, no one was able to do this so he went away with first overall for the day. Second place went to Ryan Bissenden of Duncan while Brayden Riddell of Parksville took home third place.
Some of the best riding of the day took place in the 50-cc classes. In the 50-cc 4-6 class, it was Damon Boulax who got to the finish line first to take first overall for the day back home with him to Victoria. Second overall for the day went to Abbotsford with Jaccob Piccolo. David Bradley took home third place to Saltspring Island.
In the older 7-8 class of the 50-cc there were two Saltspring Island riders going at it for top place. In the end, it was Harrison Bradley who beat out Austin Archer for first place overall. Third place overall went to Victoria with Steven Galey.
Campbell River rider Darcy McKenna had a good weekend of riding in the Vet Master class. He returned home in second place after being edged out of first place by Ladysmith rider Dan Smith. Third place went David Mout of Courtenay.
McKenna went up against some great riders in the 25 plus class. He had to deal with the likes of Lange and Nanaimo’s Bruce Donaldson. When the checkered flag came out, it was Lange who took first for the overall win of the day. Donaldson took second while McKenna took home third place.
It was a great day for both the spectators and the riders. There were just a few minor crashes and downed riders. Best of luck to Courtenay rider James Grant who went down in the warmups and was unable to finish the day. I hope that you are feeling better and are up and back on the bike real soon. Also, the best of luck for a speedy recovery to Kurt Nelson of Lake Cowichan.
