Fun and games
Here are the results of round 6 of the CMRC Vancouver Island Spring Series
When you have a good pit full of motocross bikes, you know it’s going to be a great day of motocross racing. That is what it was like on June 8 at the Campbell River Motocross Park. There were riders from all over the Lower Mainland who made their way over to the Island for some fun in the sand and gravel. The track was in nice shape thanks to the help of volunteers who worked hard to ensure it was in top shape for the races.

A few of Canada’s top riders were on hand this weekend as well as some first time riders.
Spectators were treated to some top-notch riding as Campbell River’s Dusty Klatt made his way to the track. Klatt was on a break from the Canadian Nationals this weekend and showed up at his home town track to surprise his many fans. What a show he put on. He flew through the whoops section and got lots of big air.
Klatt rode in the Youth and the Pro MX1 classes. In the Youth class he rode against another local rider—Andrew Belin. Both riders did some very impressive riding and thrilled the crowd on hand with their burm-railing and high-jumping tail whips on the upper jumps. Not be outdone by these two riders, Courtenay rider Colton McLean went in the class and put on a good show of his own. McLean was able to get past Belin in the first moto and finish the morning moto second behind Klatt. In the afternoon moto, Klatt roared out of the start gates and held the lead to the checkered flag first. Again McLean and Belin were left to battle it out for second. This time Belin never gave McLean a chance to get past. Klatt finished the day in top place, McLean took home second overall and Belin finished third.
Both Klatt and Belin were lined up for the MX1 class. They wanted to put on a good show for the crowd and finish on the podium. The crowd wasn’t disappointed as Klatt and Belin gave it their all. One of the most impressive things they did was to dive right into the whoops section and triple them. It was Klatt who took home first overall while Belin took second overall. Braydon Riddell of Parksville competed in the MX1 as well and he returned home with third place overall.
Again, there were only two riders in the MX2 Pro class: Darcy Lange and McLean. Lange had a spill in the whoops section and that left an opportunity for McLean to try and put some distance between himself and Lange. The distance was not enough as Lange remounted and twisted as much as he could to try and catch McLean. He did catch him but it took a few laps to get past McLean. This was one of the most exciting races of the day. Lange placed first overall and McLean second. McLean headed off to Morden, Manitoba, after the race to compete in the MX2 East series of the CMRC Canadian National Pro. He will be competing in Nanaimo at the Wastelands on July 12 to 13. Best of luck to you Colton.
Nick Syrotuck of Nanoose Bay got all he could handle from some of the Lower Mainland riders. Syrotuck managed to hold them off and finish the day with first place overall. Spencer Knowles of New Westminster finished the day in second overall while third place went to Farshad Maleky of Burnaby.
Lange also rode in the Plus 25 class. He rode it so well that he wasn’t caught by any riders and it was another first-place podium finish for the Courtenay rider. Second went to Tom McKeachie of Salt Spring Island and third place went to Campbell River rider Darcy McKenna.
Not to be outdone by the guys, the ladies went out on the track and rode just as hard, if not harder at times. Any one of these ladies can go head-to-head with the guys. Camille Baker of Nanaimo gave it her all with a fist full of throttle and it paid off as she went home with first place overall. It was the battle of Port Alberni for second place. Alberni riders Paige Hansen and Amy Aspell went bar-to-bar but in the end it was Aspell who took second and Hansen third overall for the day.
Salt Spring Island riders were at it again this weekend in the 50 c.c. 7-8 class. It was a great battle in the first moto as Harrison Bradley and Austin Archer were each trying to outride the other as they were back and forth in first place. Just a few feet from the finish line Bradley went down and left the door open for Archer to sneak past. Bradley didn’t make any mistakes or have slideouts in the afternoon moto however; he and Archer went at it again but this time Bradley crossed the finish line first. Archer was right behind him the whole time waiting for an opening but it never came. Bradley went home with first overall and Archer second. Third place for the day also went to Salt Spring Island with Whyte Scheres.
Best of luck and a speedy recovery to Timothy Aiken and to Daniel Vanderbasch who went down during a race. I hope they are both feeling well and are up and around real soon.
