Port Alberni, British Columbia
The best of the west
Top riders from across B.C. competed at the provincial championships
The Canadian Motosport Racing Club’s (CMRC) 2008 BC Provincial Championships were held at the Alberni Valley Motocross Park in Port Alberni July 4 to 6. What a weekend it was—there was great riding, great people and a great track. The only glitch to the weekend was the weather.

The track was in the best of shape and the Alberni Motocross Association deserves a huge pat on the back for the months of work they spent to ensure the facility was ready for the event. It is no easy task to pull off an event of this magnitude. There was also a fantastic band that played to a huge crowd on Saturday evening. Local band Mr 2 Cents put on a great performance for all to enjoy and Ryan Bradley did a great job of closing out the weekend by presenting all the hardware to the riders for their excellent riding.
What a race the ladies had in their class—even in the mud the ladies can really give the throttle a twisting. They never slowed down at all this weekend. Camille Baker of Nanaimo and Port Alberni rider Amy Aspell were going tire to tire all weekend. Aspell tried hard to keep the first place right at home in Port Alberni and she stayed right behind Baker, just waiting for a chance to pass. The opportunity never came, however, and Aspell had to settle for second place overall. Paige Hansen, also of Port Alberni, was giving it all she could as well, and she ended up with third place overall.
Some terrific riding took place in the 50 c.c. classes; it was no easy task for the little bikes to run on the track since they are so close to the ground that it doesn’t take much for them to get hung up or stuck in the mud. The little guys took it in stride and made the best of the chances they got. It was a great weekend of racing for Damon Balaux with the younger 4-6-year-olds as he went back to Victoria with first place overall. Jacob Piccolo of Abbotsford also had a good weekend and went home with second place for all his hard riding. Steady riding and some good luck is all it took for Salt Spring Island rider Colton Archer as he was rewarded with a third place overall.
Harrison Bradley of Salt Spring Island was the rider who was pursued for the lead in the older 7-8 class of the 50 c.c. Bradley was untouchable as he crossed the finish line first and took home first overall. He was followed by Lower Mainland rider Brody Schmidt while third place went to Salt Spring Island with Brandon Johnston.
In the Plus 40 class Kari Mielty of Courtenay was untouchable as he tore up the track. Mielty returned home with top place for the weekend while Lower Mainland rider Brian Hoy was rewarded with a second place finish. Third place overall went to Victoria rider Dan Nikirk.
There was a real battle in the Vet Master class between Port Alberni rider Dwight Dockendorff and Monkey Butt Racing rider Paul Gallagher of Victoria. These two went back and forth all weekend but when the weekend came to a close and the racing was over, it was Gallagher who edged Dockendorff out of first place by just three points. Third place overall went to one of the volunteers who helped organize the event—Port Alberni rider Paul Hansen.
Braydon Olson of Courtenay had a good weekend. He was on a mission to bring first place in the BC Provincial Championships home with him—and he did that with authority. Olson went unbeaten in the MX2 Junior class while second place overall went to the Lower Mainland with Brandon Cyr. Third place overall stayed in Port Alberni with Neil Peffers.
Spencer Knowles of New Westminster made the most of his trip over to the Island; he rode to victory in the MX2 Intermediate class. Second place went to Cory Forrest and third place to Adam Crockart, both from Duncan.
One of the most exciting races held this weekend was the MX2 Pro race. It was Courtenay rider Colton McLean who just grabbed a fist full of throttle and roared out of the start gates to build a huge lead, lap after lap. His Suzuki was untouchable as he roared across the finish line to take home first overall while Colby Petersen of the Lower Mainland took second place. Bryce Aspell of Port Alberni finished third overall.
Not only did McLean do well in the MX2 Pro class but he was also untouchable in the Youth class. His Suzuki performed well all weekend in both classes. Once out in front of the pack, McLean had to keep the bike in the upright position and have good control as the mud was deep Saturday. The track dried out and was much better on Sunday, however.
McLean had to be at the top of his game on Sunday as Nick Syrotuck of Nanoose Bay and Brayden Riddell of Parksville tried hard to spoil his weekend. They were unsuccessful, though, and McLean returned home with first place overall. Syrotuck finished the weekend out in second place and Riddell in third.
What a weekend of spills and thrills it was in Port Alberni. Luckily, there were more thrills than spills. To all that took a spill, I hope you are up and getting around soon.
