Wicked racing in Campbell River

The CMRC Vancouver Island Fall Series delves into the sixth round

What a picture perfect way to end motocross racing in Campbell River for the 2009 season. Round six of the CMRC Vancouver Island Fall Series took place October 4 at the Campbell River Motocross Park under clear skies and perfect track conditions, thanks to Colton McLean. McLean spent countless hours grooming the track and thanks to all the volunteers who were out in force to make sure the day went off with out any hitches. There was a battle for who was going to take first place home to Port Alberni—between Paige Hansen, Amy Aspell and Kayla Peefers in the Ladies class. In the morning it was Hansen and Aspell going bar-to-bar back and forth all moto. But when the checkered flag came out it was Aspell that took the morning win by just a few feet. In the afternoon moto it was full throttle racing from the drop of the gate. Just one small error cost Hansen the overall win for the day as she stalled the big four-stroke she was riding. That left Aspell and Peefers to battle for the lead, but once again Aspell came through the finish line first to take the win and the overall for the day. Peefers returned home in second place. Third overall for the day went to Campbell River rider Lindsey McLean. Hansen finished the day in fourth place. h3. A rush of activity There were some thrills and a spill that took place in the Pro GP class. Courtenay rider Colton McLean was up against a great rider as Nick Syrotuck of Nanoose Bay made his way up for race day in Campbell River. Syrotuck and McLean were going all out in both motos. In the morning moto McLean had a slight lead, only to have a small incident on the track cost him that lead. Syrotuck’s lead was short-lived as McLean came back to regain the lead with just a few laps remaining. Their afternoon race was just as exciting as the morning moto, with high-flying tail whips. Not be outdone by these two, Ross Sherman of Saanichton was giving the crowd some thrills on the lower table top. He was showing the crowd his own stuff—like no-footers—as well as no-handers, while in the air. His tail whips were also exciting the crowd. When the race was over, it was McLean that took the win for the day while Syrotuck returned home second overall and Sherman third. These three were also out-riding the Youth class, giving it all they had. But when it was all done for the day McLean would once again prevail on top. Syrotuck would finish second while Sherman would return home in third. Again, Crofton rider Cory Cardinal was riding in top form. He was giving it all he had and was rewarded with top place for his flawless performance this week in the classes he was entered into. He took home top place in the MX2 Junior class while second place went to Travis Clarkson, also of Crofton, and Peter Swanwick of Victoria took third. Cardinal took home first overall in the 85cc 12-16 class as well. Second place overall went home Damon Riesach of Nanaimo while Kyle Knorr of Errington went home with third place overall. Cardinal was also riding in the Junior GP class and took first place for the day while Daniel Vanderbasch took second place home to Victoria with him. Clarkson took home third place overall. h3.Obstacles and victories It was tough day for Campbell River rider Jesse White, who was riding great this weekend in both the MX2 Junior and Junior GP classes. White was riding his last race of the day when he overshot a tabletop and went down hard. Hope you’re doing good Jesse and are able to return soon to the sport you love to do. In the younger 85cc 7-11 class it was Black Creek rider Blain Morrow that was the rider to catch. He rode two perfect motos to take home first overall, while it was Victoria rider Bryce Currie that finished the day in second overall. Third overall for the day went home with Isaiah Haylett, also of Victoria. Both Morrow and Riesach were out riding in the Supemini class this weekend but had their hands full as Lloyd Hills of Nanaimo was up competing in the class. They did their best but came up a little short as Hills crossed the finish line first overall for the day. Riesach just crossed the finish line ahead of Morrow to take second place leaving Morrow with third place for the day. Ryder Roth of Campbell River was riding well this weekend in the 50cc 4-6 class. He was going head to head with Cameron Bradley of Saltspring Island and Port Alberni rider Drake Richmond. When the day ended it was Bradley that would take the overall win for the day while Richmond took home second place. Roth would finish the day in third place. Not to be outdone by his younger brother Cameron, David Bradley was out there riding the older 7-8 class of the 50cc. He put together two perfect motos and took home first place overall while Duncan rider Justin Daniels took home second place. Saltspring Island rider Colton Archer returned home with third place overall for effort. While his two younger brothers took top place for the day in their respected classes Harrison Bradley was not going to be shown up by them—so what did he do? He twisted his throttle as hard as he could to make sure he was going to return home with a first place as well. He did that in the 65cc class as he beat out Austin Archer, also of Saltspring Island. Third place overall went to Joe Nikirk of Shawnigan Lake. h3.Thrills and spills Tough break for one of the top 65cc class riders. Wyatt Youland of Duncan went down and was injured, so he had to be transported to the Campbell River Hospital. He was later transferred to his home town for surgery. Hope you are doing well Wyatt, and that you are up and around and back riding as soon as you are able to. There was some riding taking place in the MX1 Beginner class this weekend. Nanaimo rider Robert Wolf came up to Campbell River to give it his all and was rewarded with first place overall. That left two Campbell River riders to battle it out for second place overall. It was Bryson Lasota that edged out Steve Revoy for second place leaving Revoy with third place overall. Shane Southern of Campbell River was the rider that took home first place overall for the MX2 Beginner class this weekend. Nanaimo rider Tamara Hills rode well in the class and returned home with second place. Third place for the day went to Campbell River rider Tanner Roth. Conner Barnes of Shawnigan Lake rode two perfect motos in the MX2 Intermediate class to take home first overall for the day. Scott Louttit came over to the Island from Mission and took home second place overall for the day with him. Third place overall went home to Saanichton with Sean Poire.
