Thanksgiving weekend on the track
Rounds seven and eight of the CMRC Vancouver Island Fall Series

What a great weekend of racing up on the North Island this past Thanksgiving weekend, as the Tri Port Track hosted rounds seven and eight of the Vancouver Island CMRC Vancouver Island Fall Series. Great people, great food, and great racing— the turkey dinner cooked up there was second to none and there was plenty for the hungry racers and their families. Oh, almost forgot—great bonfire as well, thanks to Mike Cardinal. I am sure everyone on that end of the Island felt the heat from it. h3. A splendid atmosphere The track was in fantastic shape thanks to Mark Ellis and his team of volunteers. There was also an appearance from a former North Island pro racer, Jared Eagle showed up at the track on Sunday. He arrived from Winnipeg where he now lives, and decided to head up for the day and check out how the track looks. He filled in some of the history of the old Seven Mile track, as he was one of the founders. He liked what they have done with it now since he has retired from racing and last rode the track six years ago, before it was closed down. In the Pro GP class Courtenay rider Colton McLean rode away with the overall this weekend on both days. He was so fast on the sandy track that he was riding lap times of 1:20 -1:30. Second place overall on Saturday went home with Ross Sherman of Sannichton who was one of the crowd’s favourite riders. Nick Syrotuck of Nanoose Bay took home third. h3. Sunday riders On Sunday, McLean was once again the rider to try and catch, turning in more fantastic lap times. Sherman once again took second while Syrotuck took third home. These guys were also going bar-to-bar in the Youth class both days, but luck was not on Sherman’s or Syrotuck’s side as they took home some of the best sand the North Island has to offer. McLean took home top place for both days while Conner Barnes of Shawinigan Lake took full advantage of the bad luck Sherman and Syrotuck had. Barnes took second place on Saturday. Sherman and Syrotuck did bounce back and had a good day of racing on Sunday. They were riding great, kept the bikes upright and had a handful of throttle. They were battling hard to try and stay ahead of each other as they were back and forth all throughout the moto. In the end it was McLean that took first once again while Syrotuck took second and Sherman third. h3. Action packed racing In Ladies class there was some really good riding taking place this weekend. Paige Hansen of Port Alberni made the most of her trip up Island as she returned home with top place overall for both days. There was battle for second going on between Campbell River rider Lindsey McLean and Port Alberni Rider Kayla Peffers. When the checkered flag was waved on Saturday it was McLean that took home second place overall while Peffers went home in third. There were some very scary moments on Sunday in the Ladies Class during the afternoon moto. Peffers and McLean were riding hard and jumping long distances over the tabletops. While doing the step down McLean clipped bars with Paisley Randell of Nelson who was on the Island doing some practicing at some of the Island tracks, both riders went down hard and were unable to finish the moto. It was Peffers that finished the day second overall while Tamara Hills of Nanaimo took third. I hope both McLean and Randell are doing fine and able to get back on the bike soon. It was a real race to the finish line in all four motos this past weekend in the 65cc class between Shawinigan Lake rider Joe Nikirk and Saltspring Island rider Harrison Bradley. Also in mix was Victoria rider Steven Galey. Keep your eyes peeled as these three up and comers are heading in right direction to be top contenders in the future. When the weekend came to a close for racing it was Nikirk that took top place this time with Bradley taking home second and Galey third. h3. Keeping the momentum In the Vet Junior class it was Campbell River rider Arlen Roth that was in the lead and untouchable all weekend. He went across the finish line first on both days to take home top place while David Alsop of Powell River took home second place overall on Saturday and Courtenay rider David Mouat took home third place overall. On Sunday it was Mouat that crossed the finish line second behind Roth. Third place went to Saltspring Island Rider Matt Kerrigan Corey Cardinal of Crofton continued his winning ways on the weekend. He rode in several classes and took first overall in each of them. On Saturday Cardinal was followed over the finish line by Port Hardy rider Jason Abernathy who finished the day second overall while third place went to Alex Haley of Port Alberni in the 85cc 12-16 class. Tough luck for Port Alberni rider Dylan Hansen who was up for the races. Hansen took the hole shot over Cardinal in the first moto for Saturday on to go down just a few feet from the whole shot and break his arm. Hope you are doing good Dylan. Best of luck to you for a speedy recovery. On Sunday Cardinal chose not to ride the class and it was Abernathy that was the rider to take first overall for the day while Kyle Knorr of Errington took home second. Haley finished the day in third place once again. Cardinal was also riding the MX2 class this weekend. He took home top place in both days. Saturday it was two Campbell River club riders that were going at it for second place. It was Courtenay rider William Blackburn that crossed the finish line just ahead of Brendan Fear of Campbell River. h3. Battling hard Sunday Cardinal picked up right where he left off the previous day. He finished in first overall while this time Fear was in a real battle for second place. Peter Swanwick of Victoria was doing all he could to try a stop Fear from taking second overall. It was all to no avail as Fear outrode him and took second while Swanwick took home third place. Cardinal was also riding the Junior GP class this weekend and took home first overall both days. Swanwick was also out there riding the class both days. Saturday he took home second overall while Powell River rider Curtis Best returned home with third place. Sunday it was Swanwick once again that was banging bars with Fear for second place. When the day was done and the checkered flag came out it was Fear that took home second place while Swanwick placed third. Courtenay rider Blain Morrow had a great weekend of racing up Island. He returned home with first overall both race days in the 85cc 7-11 class while Bryce Currie of Victoria took home second place. Third overall went home with Tanner Cardinal of Crofton. In the Super Mini class it was Nanaimo rider Lloyd Hills that took home first place overall on both days. Morrow and Currie were going all out. Saturday Currie took second place over all while Morrow had to settle for third. Sunday it was Morrow that managed to get the lead for second and hold off Currie to take second overall for the day. Currie finished the day third. It was a good weekend of racing for two Campbell River riders in the MX1 Beginner Class on the weekend up Island. Steve Revoy and Bryson Lasota were twisting their throttles hard on both days to get all they could out of the bike they were riding. Saturday Lasota was trying his best to get past Robert Wolfe of Nanaimo to take the lead but ran out of time and had to settle for second place to Wolfe. Revoy took home third place. On Sunday Lasota managed to stay ahead of Wolfe as did Revoy. On Sunday it was Lasota that was being chased by both Revoy and Wolfe. When the trophies were presented it was Lasota that took home first while Revoy returned home in second overall. Wolfe went home with third place.
