A weekend of thrills

The Nanaimo Motocross Association hosted rounds one and two of the BC Championship Series

It was a great weekend for motocross racing this past May long weekend at the Wastelands in Nanaimo—great weather, great people and a great track. There were even some nice new wash stations  put in for the riders to wash up their bikes.  Lots of spills and thrills took place as the Nanaimo Motocross Association hosted rounds one and two of the B.C. Championship Series. There was some great bar-to-bar race action in most classes. There were riders from both ends of the Island and all points between as well as riders from the Lower Mainland and right up to Fort St. John to thrill the crowd on hand all weekend.

Camille Baker of Nanaimo and Amy Aspell of Port Alberni were going at it from the drop of the start gate right to the checkered flag both days of racing. But Baker was the rider who took the checkered flag first both days and Aspell had to settle for second overall. Third place overall for both days of racing also went to Port Alberni as Kayla Peefers had a great weekend of racing in the Ladies class.

There was some great racing in the Pro classes this May long weekend as well. There were Pro riders over for the weekend from the Lower Mainland as well as from up and down the Island. In the MX1 class it was a tough first day of racing for Courtenay Pro rider Eric Wickman as he was out front and riding a good race till his rear tire went flat on him on Saturday. That left the checkered flag to wave first for Saltspring Island rider Howie Spencer. Spencer didn’t show up for his second moto as bike problems prevented him from doing so, but Wickman did and what a moto he had with his rear tire repaired. He rode to the checkered flag first for the moto. He had to settle for second overall as Colby Peterson took home first overall for the day. Third overall went to Monkey Butt racer Paul Gallagher of Victoria.

On Sunday there was some bar banging and tire rubbing taking place in the MX1 class. Campbell River rider Andrew Belin was on hand to thrill the crowd as he went head to head with some of the top MX1 riders in B.C. He was out there riding bar to bar with Spencer in both motos waiting  for an opening to come for him to whip on by. Belin took full advantage of the opening when it came only to go down and remount again in last position. He managed to come back and win the race and take the overall for the day. Spencer had to settle for second place overall while third went home to Courtenay with Lee Coutts, someone the Island crowd had not seen for a while.

Some high-flying burm railing took place in the MX2 class as Spencer Knowles of New Westminster made his way over to the Island to compete in the B.C. Championship Series. He took home first place overall for both days. Second place overall went to Courtenay rider Colton McLean who rode two consistent days. Third place overall for Saturday went to Lake Cowichan rider Kurt Nelson. Coutts was out there competing on Sunday in the MX2 and rode away with third overall for the day while Nelson placed fourth.

In the Supermini class Fort St. John rider Trae Franklin made the most of his trip to the Island. He put on quite the show for the crowd as he was going head to head with Crofton rider Cory Cardinal. It was a real battle between these two but in the end it was Franklin who would take the win both days over Cardinal. Lloyd Hills of Nanaimo took hook home third place overall both days.

Cardinal rode in the 85cc 13-15 class as well this weekend. He had a hand full of throttle right from the drop of the gate and held on to take first overall for both days. Second overall went to Hills while Damon Reisach of Nanaimo took home third place overall for the weekend.

Franklin was out on the track in the School Boy class giving it all he had to take the checkered flag first as well as the overall win for the weekend. Second overall went to Parksville rider Jordan Piccolo who rode well both days. Third place overall for both days went to Victoria rider Peter Swanwick.

Peffers also had a good weekend of racing in the MX2 Beginner class as she rode to the checkered flag first on Saturday. Justin Hesketh of Nanaimo took home second place on Saturday. Third place for that day went to Port Alberni rider Jason Samson.

The overall win Sunday went to Hesketh who rode well. Luke Norman of Nanaimo rode well enough to take home second place overall on Sunday. Campbell River rider Jesse White was riding well on Sunday and returned home with third place overall.

There was some great riding in the GP Beginner class on the long weekend. Port Hardy rider Sterling Christensen was out there with a mission. His mission—make the podium at all cost at least once on the weekend. Well, he did just that on Saturday when he took home first overall for the day. Second overall went to Hesketh while White finished the day in third overall.

On Sunday it was a real battle for the podium finish. It was so tight in the afternoon moto that there were four riders battling it out each lap for the first-place finish. Hesketh, Christensen and White were in a real battle along with Trinity Sure of Williams Lake. It was Hesketh who took home first overall while Sure took home second overall. White and Christensen were giving it all they could and were side by side when they crossed the finish line. It was Christensen who got the checkered flag ahead of White by just inches. White got third overall for the day as he out-pointed Christensen, who had to go home with fourth overall.

Some fantastic racing took place in both 50cc classes on the weekend as well. In the younger 4-6 class it was Jacob Piccolo who was over from Abbotsford for the weekend making the most of his trip over—he was rewarded with two first-place finishes for the weekend. Second overall went to Cameron Bradley of Saltspring Island for his consistent riding.

It was Jacob Weddell of Ladner who took first place overall for both weekend races home with him. Wyatt Youland of Duncan put together two great motos and was rewarded with second place overall for both days. Third place overall went to Saltspring Island rider David Bradley on Saturday while third place for the Sunday race went to Shawinigan Lake rider Colby Egeland.

  • When you store start with STA-BIL

STA-BIL Fuel Stabilizer is specially formulated to keep fuel fresh for quick, easy starts after storage. Normally, stored fuel can go bad in as little as 60 days, causing varnish deposits and corrosion to build up in engines; however, with STA-BIL's blend of scientific additives, fuel will stay fresh for up to two years (using twice the recommended dosage). It also cleans carburetors and fuel injectors, prolongs engine life and eliminates the need to drain fuel before storage. STA-BIL Fuel Stabilizer can be used for all two- and four-stroke gasoline engines, including snowmobiles, ATVs, motorcycles, boats, jet skis and other power equipment.

  • HOW DOES SNOWMOBILING AFFECT CARIBOU?

As most snowmobiling occurs in high elevation areas, there is the potential for snowmobiling to disturb and displace these animals from their preferred habitat into areas less suitable and more prone to avalanches. Mountain caribou may also become stressed, which can affect energy reserves during critical time periods. In addition, snowmobile trails can provide easier access for predators into areas occupied by mountain caribou. Please take caution and be aware of, and avoid, mountain caribou in your riding area.
