Break into the summer ATVing season byheading to Logan Lake for the 2nd Annual ATV Poker Ride. Plans are shaping up and excitement has been mounting as the event comes closer to its start.
Hosted by Logan Lake ATV Club, the poker ride takes place on Saturday, June 24th, but according to co-chair Beverley Felske, its a completely full weekend of riding.
"What we found out happened last year was people came up Friday and they rode Friday afternoon and went in the Poker Ride Saturday, and then Sunday went for another ride," said Felske.
She added, "We even had people coming up on the Wednesday."
Riders meet at the Logan Lake Ranch and Country Club where they buy a poker hand and choose between five different trails to ride on that vary from 30 to 100 kilometres in length. Additional cards are drawn out on the trails, and a final card is drawn back at the registration area where the person with the best poker hand wins a 2006 Bombardier DS 250 ATV.
Other activities at the Poker Ride include a dealer demo, where manufacturers present their latest models and people have the opportunity to ride any brand. As well, ATV enthusiasts can enjoy breakfast, lunch and supper at the concessions, as well as a bonfire at night. Dry camping is available onsite for 5$ per night, and people are encouraged to bring their RV and stay the whole weekend. And since it is a family event, there will be a kids ride and a colouring contest with the opportunity to win a Yamaha 50 cc for the kids.
After the success of last year's event, Felske said they are expecting 600 people to show up this year—99% of them being riders.
"We expect this to grow," she said. "I'm being conservative when I say 600. Of all the people that I have spoken to at every ATV event I go to, they are all talking about the Poker Ride and they want to come back and want to bring a friend. So if they do that, we could be 800 to 900."
Felske also said it is an excellent event to go to because you can ride in a very safe environmentally-friendly manner. The trails are completely signed, colour-coded and safe for the whole family.
"You can choose whatever trail you want based on your own riding skills," said Felske, "and it's a full day event, so we encourage everyone to come up with their RV and bring their children and go out as a family."
