Most activities tend to draw only a select group of enthusiasts—whether it be ATVers, motorcyclists or snowmobilers. However, there are some that appeal to a wide range of tastes, such as silhouette target shooting.

The sport—started in Mexico in the 1950s—requires competitors to fire at steel figures in rapid succession without missing. The catch is that they are on a time limit and must shoot off-hand, which demands a high level of skill and technique. This activity is not only fun for participants but is great entertainment for spectators as well.

Every year, there are a variety of events organized by groups in western Canada who are dedicated to this exclusive sport, such as the Bull River Shooters Association.

Formed in 1987, this club actively promotes and participates in silhouette target shooting in the East Kootenay region. They proudly boast Canada's best shooting range located at Fort Steele. This season, the group is pleased to be hosting a number of large events—including the Canadian National Silhouette Championships. According to Maureen Gordon, club treasurer, anyone who attends the event better be up for a good time.

"There is a wonderful cameraderie involved with our sport as we get to know more and more people," said Gordon. "Of course, some of the top shooters are a little more serious but during breaks and between shooting times there is a lot of good-natured stuff going on."
