Years ago, I spent a few months working in a town called Haines Junction in the Yukon. From the moment I stepped foot into the community, I was astounded by the staggering scenery. Situated at the base of the Kluane Mountains—the range boasting the highest peaks in Canada that make the Rockies look like pipsqueaks—the area is pristine, rugged and without equal in terms of wow factor.
The wow factor is what will entice motorcyclists to the Yukon and Alaska this summer to take part in Ride Yukon ’08. From June 18 to 22, riders will journey through pristine wilderness along the Golden Circle. From Whitehorse to Haines Junction, Yukon, and Haines and Skagway, Alaska, this route travels through boreal forest, coastal rainforest and icefields—and through the home of some of the healthiest populations of grizzly bears on earth.
The tour also offers opportunities to explore the charming communities along the route. Natural splendour meets incredible history in this area and riders will get their fill.
From Skagway, the ride follows the South Klondike Highway toward Whitehorse. But as incredible as the journey is, the best may be saved for last. The Midnight Sun Bun Run will take riders to Braeburn Lodge at Mile 55 on the Alaska Highway just before midnight as the sun is setting. Participants can stock up on coffee and cinnamon buns before departing as the sun rises—just over an hour and a half later.
