Elkford is home to hundreds upon hundreds of trails
Reputed as the Wilderness Capital of B.C., it is no wonder Elkford offers endless backcountry adventures. With towering mountains, lush forests and abundant wildlife, this area is treasured by experienced riders as well as families.

"We have everything," said Gordon Galloway, treasurer of the Elkford ATV Club. "We have road riding, bush-style riding and we have the mountain riding."
Galloway, who has lived in Elkford since 1971, loves venturing into the alpine where trails lead to stunning views of the entire valley. Some of the popular spots to ride are the Lookout Trail, Weigert Creek Trail and Crossing Creek Trail—which leads into the Bull River area. Riders must keep in mind that some of these places have restricted land use and are only open to ATVing during certain times of the year.
The entire valley is also covered with trails that feature road-style riding and flat terrain—ideal for a family cruise.
Although he enjoys every trip into Elkford's beautiful backcountry, one of Galloway's favourite spots to ride is Crown Mountain.
"It's always a pretty ride up over Crown Mountain," said Galloway. "It goes down a ridge that's probably two kilometres long and you look into a valley 1,000 metres below. It's just a very nice ride."
A major advantage for riders in Elkford is the ATV-friendly atmosphere. There is a bylaw that permits ATVers to access the trails from town; however, a district licence plate, liability insurance, a driver's license and helmets are required.
"For our residents, it's very nice to be able to ride from town," said Galloway. "It's also great for tourists who come into the campground because they can ride from there."
Throughout the season, members of the Elkford ATV Club work hard to ensure the sport is kept fun and safe. Pitch-in cleanups and poker runs are all part of their regular activities. The group's largest event this year involved helping with the Girl Guides' and Boy Scouts' campout at Jim Smith Lake in Cranbrook, B.C. Volunteers started at 6 p.m. and used their machines to haul fire pits and equipment to the location.
Since its inception in 2003, the Elkford ATV Club has increased from 23 members to 106 from Elkford, Sparwood, Fernie, Jaffray, Elko, Wardner, Cranbrook, Canal Flats and Moyie Lake—making it one of the largest clubs in the province.
