“The best part of riding here is the snow-capped mountains and the hanging glaciers,” said Ron LaRoy, the director of the Revelstoke ATV Club. “It’s the many forms of wildlife—from grizzly bears and chipmunks to deer and moose. It’s the many rivers and streams and the wild range that we can access from here.”
Without any actual trails to speak of in the area, ATVers rely on road systems to find their way into the backcountry.
“We have mountain riding where roads lead to old mines, maintained logging roads and deactivated logging roads,” said LaRoy. “There are old trails that we source out via the map books or from hearsay from the old-timers.”
Because the club does not maintain any of the riding areas, there are no trail fees. However, LaRoy said they would like to see people who ride in the area become members of the club.
“We have a lot of club outings,” said LaRoy. “We do some overnight rides, a few potluck suppers and a great windup at the year end. We also try to have a cross-country ride each year.”
The best way for people new to the area to find a good place to ride is to talk with one of the local ATVers.
“Everyone has their favourite area,” LaRoy said, “but the members usually enjoy the ride on Wap Lake Road west of Revelstoke. They also like the areas around Trout Lake. There are logging roads south of town that can take you all through the backcountry. And we can ride from west of town to Seymour Arm on Shuswap Lake.”
As soon as the snow melts enough for LaRoy to get his ATV onto the logging roads, the season begins. This usually happens around mid-April and riding lasts until November.
“The best things we offer here are the scenery, the friendly people and the many areas,” LaRoy said.
